Melasma (Pregnancy Mask) - Cause and CureMelasma is a common skin disorder that is quite common in both men and women. It is seen in women post-pregnancy and is often referred to as the "mask of pregnancy".
Melasman presents itself as a dark facial skin rash and sometimes can occur on the upper portion of the arms. Melasma typical contains irregular borders. The color seen in melasma stains n can vary in color ranging from a dark brown to a deep grey. Melasma is more common in Asians, Hispanics, Arabs and North Africans ethnicities.
What Causes Melasma? The cause of melasma remains unknown but is believed to be due to an increase in the production of cells which release the pigment melanin, which is responsible for the dark color of the skin. Some common triggers include: hormone fluctuation/production, heredity, pregnancy, prolonged sun/tanning exposure, use of birth control pills, some medications such as tetracycline or drugs derived from quinine.
Melasma is harmless and is not related to any medical disorder. However, the cosmetic implications can be quite pronounced and troubling for those whom Melasma afllicts.
Cure for MelasmaMelasma is transient in nature, and usually resolves on its own over time. However, for some individuals the time factor can be a problem. From our experience the following treatments do help with Melasma
Chemical PeelsStrong chemical peels, such as TCA, Azelaic Acid, Glycolic (30% or higher), Lactic or Jezzner's peels tend to do be effective. However, with strong chemical peel one has to be careful to manage burning, skin peeling, scarring and even worsening discoloration of the skin.
Skin Lightening AgentsThere are many effective skin lightening compounds available. We prefer to use Kojic Acid compounds or Hydroquinone, or a combination thereof. Hydroquinone is most commonly used, and is quite effective when used in combination with a good exfoliation regiment.
FraxelFraxel fractionated erbium laser is probably the most effective way to get rid of melasma. We recommend a startup regiment with a hydroquinone topical 2 to 3 weeks prior to starting your Fraxel treatments, and then follow with 3 Fraxel treatments one every 4 weeks.
Prevention of MelasmaMelasma is transient and may return from time to time. To limit the reoccurance, it is always important to limit sun exposure - moderate exposure is healthy and important for your well-being. However, tanning and sunburns are not. Using a good SPF 30 or higher sunscreen that offers protection against both UVA and UVB rays is critical.
